I replaced all my dash lights with LEDs about a year ago. One of the guys in
the club got them from somewhere. They were a direct screw in replacement for
the regular bulbs which I think are about 2.2 watts per bulb. The LEDs use
next to nothing electric wise. I used the clear LEDs and have found them to be
slightly brighter than the original bulbs with a bluish tint. Seems like they
cost $7 or $8 each and I think there are 8 bulbs so they aren't exactly cheap.
The same guy later came up with regular incandescent bulbs with a higher
wattage (seems like 5+ watts) that he is using in his car. I like the bluish
tint and they seem brighter when you drive at night for a while-could be
wishful thinking.
The comments about the fact that the light has to reflect off of the inside
bezels onto the face of the gauges is right on the money. Obviously
brightening up the reflective material (wt paint in the original form) should
help. One of the guys in the club used some chrome reflective paint on his
speedo and said it improved things considerably. I haven't seen it to
corroborate his claim. If anyone is interested in these contact me off list
and I will forward your message to the guy I got mine from.
