Hi,

Dick Taylor hits the most important aspect of taking apart the
differential stub axles - that you must support the entire face of the
axle when applying the force, otherwise the flange distorts and should
never be used again.

The best way to support things if you use a press (as opposed to the
proper Churchill tool) is to use a flat plate drilled to the proper
pattern with a hole in the middle for the press. The plate should be
THICK, 1/2 or thicker steel. Torque the plate to the flange with grade 8
bolts and washers - use even torque so you don't distort things. Put it in
the press and start adding pressure... check for gaps between the plate
and the flange when pressure is applied, and if any show up, release the
pressure and re-torque.

If you need more than 20 tons to get things apart, there's apretty good
chance that the axle or the flange is going to have problems, so get the
parts crack tested to make sure things aren't going to come apart the next
time you try side-stepping the clutch. :-)

regards,
rml
