When my car had that problem, it was a warped flange where the header meets the 
head. If your car doesn't have a header, perhaps your exhaust manifold is 
cracked or your gasket is leaking. Fumes DO get sucked in from the rear if the 
trunk gasket is leaking, but they usually only stink up the trunk and its 
contents.
