I'm sure that there will be more experienced answers
coming soon... I'd measure the voltage at the
distributor, coil side. My only input is that what
would induce a condensor (capacitor) to fail or the
Pertronix to smoke is if the voltage rating was
exceeded. I don't know what the voltage ratings on
those items are, but I would think lower than you can
get out of a 12 V battery, and I'd be surprised if
there were a 24V battery fitted? I'm not sure how
high a voltage you could get from an alternator if the
voltage regulator was failed, but, you shouldn't be
getting higher than 15V. Condensors usually fail due
to age and heat causing deterioration of the
internals, or causing it to open up.

Food for thought, we purchased a Pertronix ign. As
soon as we tried to start
the car the Pertronix smoked. (We did NOT have the
unit wired wrong = red to
pos side of the coil, black to Neg side of the coil.
