Rebuilding fuel pump

I have a full rebuild kit for the original AC fuel pump.  Is there a hint 
for removing the oil seal retainer/cup?  Since a new retainer is included in 
the kit I'm tempted to just grab the old one with needle nose pliers and 
give it a good yank.  Any other suggestions?
