Colin---I've seen this on TR engines fitted with headers. A fellow
complained to me that he couldn't find a vacuum leak, and it turned out
that the downpipe was against the pan flange, just as yours, which
prevented the manifold gasket from being bolted up snug. The "fix" was
somewhat crude but effective, calling for getting this pipe (torch) hot
enough to peen it in about one-eigth inch at the flange.

I wouldn't mess with the integrity of the pan flange.

Hi Listers: Grease gun in hand, I had the occasion to get under my car
for the first time since my local shop installed my exhaust system. I
noticed that the down pipe is making contact with the edge of the oil
pan. Short of changing the shape of the down pipes, or adding a shim in
the form of a second exhaust manifold gasket, I can't see how to correct
this. I tried to bend the edge of the oil pan out of the way, but no
luck. Any comments? Is this a common problem? Thanks. colinthom@shaw.ca
