        OK folks:

Time to reach into the more obscure areas of TR-6 Wisdom....

I converted my TR6 to J-Type overdrive last winter. The
conversion was pretty straight forward, although the number of parts
required to actually do the conversion meant that chasing parts was a
lengthy process. The OD was a used unit, purchased from a local Volvo
garage.
After installing the OD, everything worked as it should, or at
least appeared to. I started noticing that if I drove the 6 long enough
to get everything hot, the tranny would slip in reverse but never in any
forward gear. At first I thought I had buggered my clutch installation.
But after doing some research on the web, I found some Volvo service
bulletins that stated slipping in reverse (only) meant that the wet
clutch in the OD was worn. The bulletin said replace the clutch.
Well, new clutches are not available, so I am planning on having
mine rebuilt. I pulled the clutch, and I measured the friction material
remaining on the clutch. The clutch is two sided, one side being used
for 1:1 operation (non-OD) and one side being used for 1:1.27 operation.
The 1:1 side measures about 0.060" of friction material, the 1:1.27 side
measures 0.080" or so. The clutch is shaped like a brake drum with a
slight taper, and friction material is bonded to the inside and outside
of the lip. The inside is used for reverse 1:1, the outside is used for
OD. A separate roller clutch is used for 1:1 operation in all the
forward gears.
I have a Volvo manual for the OD, but no specs are given. So can
anyone out there tell me how thick the friction material is supposed to
be? Are both sides supposed to be the same? I am concerned because I
don't know if I will need to specify a material thickness for the
rebuilder. The clutch is supposedly very critical in it's specifications
(if I believe my Volvo OD manual).

Anyone out there feel comfortable enough with J-types to quote
me a spec?

        Cheers,

        Vance
