An old-timers trick to see if the engine had dropped a cylinder was to disconnect and reconnect each sparkplug wire in turn. If you pulled the wire from a "good" cylinder. the engine would slow down. If the cylinder was not contributing to a running engine, there would be no change in engine speed or sound. This method sort of works...
