Michael:

(1) Siphon as much as possible before removing the drain to remove the rest
of the gas. Be sure the receptical for the gas is grounded.

A local Jaguar XKE was burned (fixable, not destroyed)by a fire that started
by static electricity when the mechanic was draining the gas tank into a
plastic catch pan that was resting on cardboard.

I also watched footage on TV of a fire resulting from static electricity
where a man was pumping gas into gerry cans in the back of a pickup.

(2) About the only other option would be to install a Helicoil to replace
the threads.
