A long time ago (~40 years) Triumph gear shifts rattled sorta like skeletons 
on a tin roof.  The TR Factory Service Rep. told us to whack off a piece of 
garden hose and put it between the shift lever and the spring to stop it. 
Honest, he really did...and it worked.
