Mark,

The XR3000 will run at full 12 volts (resistor wire bypassed).  The XR700
may overheat and quit if the resistor wire is bypassed.  I run a XR3000 with
the resistor wire bypassed.  I removed the original ballasted coil and
installed a Lucas sport coil.  The car runs very well and cranks easily.  I
run the spark plug gap at .035
