Temp Gauge

I finally got around to checking into my temp gauge problem.  After getting
many great replies on how to troubleshoot the gauge, I'm glad to report that
the gauge is functioning after all.  The temp sending unit must be bad, or as
a few of you pointed out my thermostat may be stuck open.  What would cause
the thermostat to stick open, how often should one replace the thermostat?
