Walt,

Yes you can, & I recommend it. There is a large oil cavity that a tube 
alone does not fill so oil overfills the the area & keeps oil pressure 
from building properly. The use of the distributor shell also protect 
against damage to the oil pump shaft and pedestal base. * Remember to 
turn counter clockwise.
