It is a good thing, you have to remember that the rest of the rotating
bottom end still weighs close to 100lbs when it is assembled... so the
percentage you save is only on the order of 10% or so, rather than just
seeing the 50-70% or so you save by cutting the flywheel weight in half.
The crank alone is 65lbs, clutch cover is quite a few pounds, light flywheel
is still about 10lbs no matter where you get it from, the front damper
pulley weights a bit... and even the fan extension contributes weight if you
still have it installed. The big end of each rod, as I mentioned in my
previous email, is part of the rotating bottom end, even though it is rarely
ever considered as such.
If 22 (early) or 28lb (late) flywheels were such a necessity then modern
Hondas and VWs would have them as well... as a reference note, most VW
flywheels as of late are 14-15lbs stock and people replace them with 7lb
flywheels.
