Aaron,
What do you know about the wire wheels themselves? The splines can be worn
on them causing the problem. I would think they shouldn't be any different
than steel/alloy wheels.
It would probably do you good to contact a wire wheel specialist...Dayton or

Subject: Wire Wheels & Wheel Bearings
Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2003 00:51:47 -0400
Hi List,
After a complete front end rebuild I am having a problem that I can't chase
down the solution to. Well, several problems, but I will concentrate on one
first. The car has wire wheels and this is the first time I have owned a
car with wire wheels. When the car is sitting I can grab the top of each of
the front wheels and move them and it appears that there is some play in the
wheels. I have tightened and retightened the wheel bearings. The first
time I did it, I used a torque wrench to set the castle nut at the specified
torque, then moved the nut back a flat. This method seemed to produce too
much play so I tightened it up a bit more. This past Sunday I decided to
tighten the bearings up again and discovered the right front outer bearing
and race were garbage. Replaced the bearing and race tonight. The left
side seems to be a little tighter, but the right side is about the same.
Should wire wheels have ANY play in them at all? If not, does it sound as
though the b!
earings arent quite tight enough? What are the symptoms of a bearing that
is TOO tight? And what procedures do listers use to tighten the wheel
bearings the correct amount? I might just be a bit to timid, but I would
rather poll the list than first rather than make a mistake.
Thanks in advance for your help.
