Mark,
It sounds like you may have one of following problems:
1) your new starter has a bad solenoid (unlikely)
2) you have a poor electrical connection in the start circuit
3) you have a poor ground
4) a bad ignition switch can also cause intermittent starter operation (this
happened to me)

I would start with the ground cables and make sure they're good. I would
then clean all electrical connectors in the start circuit and coat them with
di-electric grease upon reassembly. Since your problem appears to be heat
related, I really think you probably have a connection that is breaking down
when it gets hot. As heat rises in an electrical circuit, so does
resistance. If you have a very poor connection that will work when cool, it
will sometimes stop working when the wiring is warmed by engine heat.

The last step is to replace the plastic ignition switch. My car would fail
to start but if I wiggled around on the key it would fire up after 2 or 3
tries. You can replace the electrical part of the ignition switch separately
from the mechanical section of the switch which will greatly reduce the work
and expense involved in this project.

You may want to find a good auto electrical shop if you feel you are in over
your head. A good tech can troubleshoot the electrical system by testing
the individual components and the wiring between them, which will prevent
the "parts changing" cycle that we can get into when troubleshooting our
LBC's.

I hope this helps,
