Aaron, I have always soaked my felt seals in 3 in 1 oil or something similar for a day or two. Then when inserting the dip stick and pushing it into the tube, I could get a good reading. It squeezes the excess out and flattens thefelt. 4.5qts -just under 5qts has been my experience.
