Thought I'd pass on an update on my tranny problems - many kind listers have
followed up with me on
this, and I genuinely appreciate all the help.
At this point, I have the gearbox pulled. I separated the J-type from the
gearbox, and started the
disassembly. Not long after pulling the top plate off the gearbox, I found my
problem. One of the
mainshaft needle bearing units had exploded, leaving shrapnel and roller
bearings all over the
gearbox. Fortunately, though, it doesn't appear to have damaged any gears.
So I took the opportunity to pull everything out for closer examination, and
have begun inventorying
what I will need to replace so I'm not doing this again next year! One of the
real benefits of pulling
apart a major component like this is the opportunity to clean it up - 25 years
of accumulated crud now
removed...did you know it's really a nice natural aluminum color? :-)
Soon I'll know whether I can handle the reassembly, or whether I should bow to
the knowledge and
experience of one of the local mechanics. There's a lot of personal
satisfaction in attempting
something like this, though.
More to come.
