Pete---"Clunks" in the Triumph drive train can be from one source, but
also cumulative. Sometimes a specific area of this clunk can be
identified by jacking up the rear wheels and turning one tire back and
forth, both with the transmission in neutral and again with it in gear.
The usual sources that contribute to this clunk are:
Play in the differential gears..
Play in the axle splines..
Cracked differential mount..
Any one of six U-joints..
Some part of the transmission..
U-joint bearings can be taken in or out with a press, or a decent sized
bench vise. Some owners use the appropriate wrench socket to aid with
this. The bearing cup removal can also be done with a pin punch and a
torch, but very tedious this way.
