Well it appears that I must bow to the massed wisdom of the list and stop
being a stick in the mud. So does putting heavier oil in the dampers
eliminate the need for the tube-shock conversion, or is this a temporary
sort of thing?

I've got Apple's "heavy duty" rebuilds and they are GREAT. The folks back
there really work to get things right on the first order.
Also, I used the Harley Davidson heavy duty fork oil with very good results.
If I remember correctly it was a pint for 9.95

Not to disagree with an old mechanic, but old engine oil will be full of
particles that will just wear out the shock even faster. There are good
firms doing rebuilds (Apply Hydraulics is one I've heard of) for not tto
much money. I'm not big on playing games with shocks and brakes since the
failure of same can cause serious problems.

Subject: Rear shocks "refill"
Hi,
does anyone have experience with "refilling" the rear levertype shocks ?
Mine are worn and my mechanic told me that I should try filling up with old
engine oil. If they don't leak the shocks should be back up to the task.
Did anyone try this and with what type of oil ?
Rgds
