Ken---The octane rating of gasoline is just a number that gives the burn
rate of the fuel. The higher numbers burns slower, and lowers the
likelihood of engine knock. It shouldn't have anything to do with how
clean an engine runs, emissions-wise.

When you go for the "test" try finding a station that gives a no-pass,
no pay promise, up front. In the event that the test shows too high in
either CO or HC, yet the engine runs well, it can usually be made
cleaner by leaning out the carbs. It may not take much adjustment to do
this, depending on how far over the max you are.

If you are running all stock equipment, these engines generally have no
problem in passing.
