Years ago in my student days the brother of a close friend decided to go for
a hitch-hiking trip. From Montreal, he went wandered about a bit in Canada
and then decided to head to the US for a ramble. This was still in the days
where a Canadian needed no photo-id , no passport and saying pretty much "I
are a Canuck eh" would let you drive over the border. Anyway, he arrived at
the border on foot (kind of odd back then) looking kind of raggedy. So they
asked his intentions. Upon hearing that he just wanted to ramble about a
bit, they said "fine" but asked to see how much money he had with him. He
didn't have much and was turned back. They told him that he was most welcome
but that he had to come back and show that he had $1000 in cash before they
would let him cross the border. Considering that this was in 1982 or so that
has to be about the equivalent of $3500+. Quite a policy shift... eh?

Hi Kraig,
You must not live in the US, must not fit the drug currier profile, or
you are lucky as posessing over $400 in cash is a crime in the US. Your
cash will be arrested and seized. No criminal act or conviction on your
part is needed. One of the many, many blessings from the war on drugs.
If you scoff, go to the bank, remove $10.000, put it a thick metal money
clip and fo for trip on a commercial airline. You will go to Federal prison

if you try to take your $10,000 cash to Canada and buy a car without asking
permission of the Feds first.
   Love my country, but ...
         Steve
