Actually Bruce, it is exactly the opposite. Lightening the flywheel makes it
easier to accelerate the engine and thus means more of the power is
available to accelerate the car. There is no change at all in total
horsepower available at any rotational speed. The drawback is of course that
a lighter flywheel has less angular momentum and thus requires more precise
timing on starting from stop as the transmission must be brought up to the
same rotation speed as the engine using fuel alone.

An LBC shop owner advised me not to lighten the flywheel on a street driven
TR6. He said you might gain high end horsepower, but would lose torque.
