Hi folks
I've bought a parts car that has a six-into-one mild steel header on it. The
PO said the car ran fine, with no exhaust leaks. I am considering using the
header in place of the cast stock mainfold (in hopes of some increase in
power). However, I wonder if what I am looking at is "normal" The flange
that the pipes are welded to seem to have been "built up" where the header
mates to the head. That is, on the flange, around the ports on the header,
there seems to have been welded a a very irregular plus or minus 3/4" wide
"lip" that has been ground flat. I assume this was done to obtain a seal.
The internal aspects of the ports on the header are hardly smooth, and do
not match up to the ports on the head nearly as cleanly as the stock
manifold. There seems to be a lot of weld intruding into the port on the
header. I would think that this needs to be ground away to obtain a smooth
flow. I don't know the brand of header. Am I looking at a piece of junk?
Or, is this raised area around the port the correct way that headers are
mated to the head? I think I may be better
off with the stock manifold, but the header is appealing in regard appearance
and potential performance
