I just went through this over the weekend. I ended up taking off the whole hub
assembly and then removed the tie rod lever to allow some clearance. I put the
whole thing in my vice and was able to pop out the ball joint with a sharp rap
of a hammer. The key was getting it secure in the vice and getting enough
clearance to be able to hit it directly. It didn't seem to damage the ball
joint at all, but I was planning to replace it anyways as it had prior damage.

Subject: Ball Joint
Oh wise ones of the web, I need help. With the bad weather in Boston this
weekend I decided to start my winter project early redoing the front end.
I've run into the first problem and need help. I can't seem to get the ball
joint out. I have one of the fork like ball joint tools but no amount to
hammering it will get it out. Any helpful hints?????
