You have to wonder how many people get killed this way every year. I
once got home from a deluxe oil change with the usual checks and things
like vacuuming the carpet and my front tires were inflated to 40 lbs.
That's 5 over the tire's maximum and about 12 over the recommended
pressure for the car. That's when I decided I wasn't being cheap by
changing my own oil.

And it's not just the young guys. The installer at my local shop proudly
told me he's been doing tires for 30 years (he's no kid!!), yet when I
went back to pick up the car, there were paint chips knocked off the
hubcaps where he had used his air wrench, and none of the wheels had
been checked with the torque wrench (at least they admitted it). As you
had done, I went home and did it right myself.
