Joe:
I think, if I'm remembering correctly, that the HIF SUs were developed to
meet emission laws, and are thus more complex than HS SUs (including moving
the float chamber under the carb body and a more aggressive over-rev bypass
mechanisms)...making HIFs sort of like your Z-Ss. In addition to the usual
issues of buying old carbs as previously mentioned, I'd suggest hunting
down a set of HS-series SUs if you want an upgrade.

Subject: SU HIF6 carbs
Hey List,
My Strombergs leak like cheesecloth. Instead of rebuilding myself or paying
TRF $300.00, I was looking on Ebay for options...I see some fresh 1-3/4"SU
HIF6 carbs off old Volvos for sale. Does anyone have any experience with
these?. How do they compare to HS6's ? I here that SU's are easier to
maintain and adjust than Strombergs, and may net more power. Honestly I've
not had too much trouble with the stock Strombergs (until now). I don't
know
how things match up ie: choke, crank case ventillation, linkage, etc... Any
advice before I bid?
