Hugh---Starting an engine and letting it idle with the clutch engaged
(in neutral, of course) is a good practice. Some will say it's not
"safe" to do this. New car manufacturers are starting to wire their cars
so you CAN'T do this, as part of their CYA program. Nonetheless, not
pushing on the clutch pedal gives the engine oil a chance to get between
these thrust washers and the crank at startup, and this has to add more
life time to the parts.
I understand you inherited a problem, and did what you could to keep
from replacing major parts. Nothing wrong with that!
