Hugh---I have run without this anti-rattle spring for years, never
knowing it was even missing. (No rattle gave it away.) I have always
repacked the shifter ball with heavy grease, so I guess this made a
difference here. So far as this spring breaking it shouldn't, of course,
if it's the proper length and temper. Anything other than what the
suppliers sell us would just be experimental on our part, like something
from the local hardware store?
