If you're planning on having most or all of your repairs done by a local
garage and you don't have plenty of disposable income, I wouldn't buy
the car. If you plan on working on the car or have the $$ to have
someone else do it, buy the car.
Most likely culprits for TR6 tranny leaks are front and rear seals (most
likely the rear) or the dreaded leaks from the "O" rings around the
selector rods. This is a pain because you have to remove the top cover
and then pull out the selector rods being careful not to lose the ball
bearings. The hard part is getting the little balls back in the right
place during installation. You need a manual to do this job properly.
While the rear seal and the O rings can be replaced without removing the
transmission, you'll have to pull it for the front seal. The seals are
no problem to remove and replace but a bit of advice on the replacing
the rear seal is to apply sealant to the outside of the seal before
installing. This will fill any imperfections in the soft aluminum case
caused from using the seal removing tool.
To determine where the leak is located, remove the transmission cover
and spray it down with brake cleaner and run it for a while until the
source of the leak is apparent. Sometimes the leak from the O rings
seems to come from other places as fluid runs down the transmission,
finds a joint, follows it and looks like it coming from there. So check
the rear of the top cover under the shifter first.

...Hi, new to this, hope it works need a little help. I am very close
to purchasing a 71 TR-6. Everything looks great except it has a
transmission fluid leak. Not being familiar with this car(but having
always wanted one) I am looking for some help from some experienced
owners. Any idea of rough estimate on cost to repair or if this is a
typical problem, or if this is a sign of a very large and expensive
problem. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks
