Jim,

Good point. What if, however, the piston is already all the way into the 
cylinder of the slave before shimming? With the pin the middle hole, how much 
travel should remain in a hypothetically perfectly installed slave rod?

My problem is that I did shim, and it worked and continues to work, (which is 
the bottom line, I guess!)
