Please pardon a basic question from an owner new to TR6s.
I bought my '70 TR6 PI (German model) a few weeks ago. The car is awesome!
I am having so much more fun with it than I ever had with the Porsche
convertible I sold prior to buying the TR6.
The TR6 came with side-view mirrors which appear not to be original. They
are spring loaded, with skinny vertical portions and squarish faces. The
driver's side mirror has a beat-up silver backing and the passenger side
mirror has rusted to the point where I can't adjust it, despite using
penetrating oil, time, and a vise-grips.
I bought a lovely pair of new, British-made, bullet mirrors on Ebay.
However, the installation for these mirrors looks different from the mirrors
currently mounted on the car. The current ones have screw heads that I can
expose by twisting the vertical part of the mirror, which pulls it away from
the mounted base. In other words, it looks like the base screws into the
door. By contrast, the base of the bullet mirror seems to be permanently
mounted to the mirror body, and it looks like it attaches with hex bolts
which were supplied. It looks like the hex bolts need to be inserted upward
through holes in the door to screw (upside down) into the mirror base.
Does this make sense? If I remove the current mirrors and take off the door
panels, will I be able to get to these holes from the inside despite the
window glass and other door contents? I imagine that lots of you have
swapped door mirrors in the past and have run into this before. And, if I
have to take off the door panels, any special tips to help get the handles
off and to prevent breaking the small clips? I do have a workshop manual to
follow, but it doesn't cover mirror replacement.
Thanks to everyone in advance.
