Roll Bars - Do they add to safety?

Hi

I bought a TR6 with a roll bar. I'm dubious about it effectiveness, since it 
isn't supported by frame members, only the sheet metal
of the rear shelf floor.

Any listers have thoughts about roll bar effectiveness? I'm thinking seriously 
about removing it.
