Removing Choke Knob

I purchased a replacement choke knob and I'm having a difficult time
removing the old one. I see the protruding "pin head", but as hard as I
try to push it in, I can't get it to retract so that I can pull the knob
out.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Such a simple thing and such a pain.
