Stuart---Car electrics aren't my favorite subject, but I think your idea of a bad negative ground cable is correct. It would explain the headights working, and why the engine started when 'jumping' from another vehicle, using its ground. You could measure the voltage going from the positive terminal to where the negative strap connects to the car body. The original braided cables do break down. Dick |
