Hi Pat,
My answers- one man's opinions anyway are interspersed in your questions.

Yes. Love it, it drops rpm down by about 500 or so in 4th. My J OD covers
third and 4th gears.

Never had an A-type. My mechanic says the A is pretty robust, but the J works
smoother.

In a word or so, no, not really. it can be done, but a fair amount of work
involved. you will need to wire the tranny switch from the steering wheel, to
the unit, including all power hookups. Also, the top box cover is a special
variant; it contains specially drilled holes with switches extending into the
gearbox such that the 3rd / 4th gears activate them. The normal gearbox
has a long shaft arangement out the back ( mental block, cant think of the
name). this is removed, a special spaccer is attached, the J unit then
attached to that, plus there's oil circulation holes in between it all. Also,
the driveshaft is shorter, and a special mount for the rear end of the gearbox
is required. much work would be required, it's not a simple drop-out,
stuff-in type change.

I think the od unit is a couple of inches longer, but someone else can correct
me

I think that Triumphs only on San Jose California, has J types for $800 and
change, or the whole unit, gearbox, j-type etc for around $1800 -- in US
currency.
If he's asking a dirt cheap price, which he should if it's buried in junk,
condition inknown, it might be a bargain. I know TR's only, and I think the
big 3, or at least TRF offers complete unites, requiring an exchange if
avail... or it would be a good parts box.

Basically, it can be done.. it ain't easy, it won't be cheap. is it worth
it? yeah, think so, at 70mph I'm abit under 2500 rpm, so less wear, tear. I
don't do trips of much over 100-150miles one-way, rarely over 70, it does cut
down on the noise factor, but top down, it's hard to tell. If you were given
a completed unit, I'd say go for it, to compile/build one from scratch, IMHO
it's probably more effort than it's worth..
Hope this helps you!
