'72 license plate lights

I was able to get a not broken license plate light frame from ebay.  
But the gasket has a few breaks in it.  

Has anyone tried to fix the gasket.  I was going to try black RTV.

My wife reminded me that money is tight and that I shouldn't pay 
the ~$35 to buy a new one.

But I also don't want to get pulled over at night and get a ticket.
