"open" air filter look

I've seen some TR6 and other models that have the air filters open to
the air, rather than enclosed in an air cleaner cover. I think what I've
seen is a K&N cover plate that would affix over my K&N filters to hold
them in place. Does anyone know of such a thing, and does this have any
affect on performance, negative or positive?
