alternator belt

Hey everyone, stupid question..I was changing my (76 TR6) alternator last 
night and was going to change my belt at the same time..dilemma...I can't 
seem to figure out how I get the belt between the pulley and a engine 
compartment cross brace just forward of the pulley...the gap is not wide 
enough to fit the belt through....I presently left the old one on..?Drew
