Hi Guys,

I had some clutch problems in my saloon a couple of years ago with
difficulty engaging and changing gear. I too went over my complete hydraulic
system rebuilding the MC and SC and lots of stuff in between. Even after
this, I still wasn't getting enough movement from the slave cylinder to
properly disengage the clutch.

In the finish, I ended up replacing the clutch (it had done 60,000ml so was
stuffed anyway) with a borg and beck high-rise clutch which solved my
problem. I chose this over the luk clutch purely for economy reasons.

One thing I have been tripped up by before is making sure the hydraulics are
bled properly. It is quite difficult to get the air out of the slave
cylinder while it is in position.

The thing I really did like about the luk clutch was the light pedal weight
(the borg and beck clutches are very heavy in comparision). A friends car
had a luk clutch in and th clutch pedal was lighter than the accelerator
pedal!.

In 1978/79, the last of the NZ built saloon cars had a laycock clutch fitted
to lighten the pedal (as our market was just starting to be invaded by Jap
cars). The Luk clutch has a very similar feel to the Laycock.

Hope this is helpful.

Jay,

This sounds like a good idea, I am curious to see how the
LuK clutch package works out for you - I'd like to see a
comparison between this kit and an original Laycock setup,
to see if dimensions, mechanics ( i.e. spring/finger pressure, etc)
or materials that have been changed. I believe this was touched
upon by someone in the (Minnesota?) TR Club - actually they
compared the Borg and Beck vs an original Laycock I believe,
and found the B&B to require lots more force to operate,
suggesting this put additional force on the rest of the
system. This makes sense to me, but I don't think we really
have any solid data to support it.
In addition, it would be interesting to also compare the
Sachs components w/the B&B and LuK/Laycock parts...

Hello All,

Just my 2 cents on a possible resolution to the dreaded 6 cylinder
Triumph clutch problems. I put together a checklist to reference when
into a clutch replacement. I think it could be useful to individuals
that are new to the world of clutch systems and to us as a whole to get
a
grip on this troublesome clutch system. Most people just want to get in
and get out when doing a clutch and who can blame them. We want to
drive
these things. Me, I like to do things once "correctly" and move on to
the next project. My thoughts are that if people approach a clutch with
the intention of gathering information along the way, it might help them
as well as all of the other Triumph 6 cylinder owners with future clutch
problems. I think a lot of people are happy with their "Magic" type
clutch right now but may not be after a few thousand miles on the clock.
I will be installing a LuK clutch this winter and will be using the
checklist to document everything I take out and install. I presently
have a Borg & Beck plate and disk (not sure which one), Toyota release
bearing and .70" M/C. Everything else appears to be stockTR6 parts. We
all trust that the parts we are getting are "correct" for our cars but
it
appears that the recipe has been tainted along the way.

We will be posting this checklist and a shop reference document on our
club website soon. The reference doc is just a compilation of
information, much of it opinion, that I have retrieved from emails, web
sites and the archives. If you want one or both now just send me an
email and I will forward to you as an attachment.

Good luck,
