Corey---Most engines run efficiently just short of boiling the water. Of
course we add a safety factor for peace of mind, which brings the number
down around 180 deg. To see if the gauge is working correctly, it is
necessary to test the true temp of the water in the radiator, as with a
thermometer. If it matches the cockpit gauge and is low, it's likely the
thermostat is stuck in the 'open' position. A new 'stat will hold back
enough water to reach its designed opening temperature. New anti-freeze
and/or WaterWetter wil not lower coolant temperature if the thermostat
is working as it should. They have another purpose.
