Alan---It takes 'less pedal' to disgage a worn clutch, due to loss of
lining. Assuming there's no air in the hydraulic system, there is a
good chance that you have excess play in the pedal box. Try lifting up
on the clutch pedal to see if you can move the pedal without the pushrod
moving. If it is ovalled out or the clevis pin is worn badly, these two
causes of play must be corrected to get the pedal farther from the floor
before clutch engagement starts.
Also, the early TR's seemed to have bushings in the pedal box cross
shaft that 'vaporized', leaving this shaft wobbly on both ends. If this
is so in your case, it's not difficut to remove the box and replace
these two bushings. While the box is out it will give you a better look
at repairing the ovalled hole in the clutch pedal arm. Check the
pushrod itself for lost play thru ovalling.
When all is well here you should have clutch dis/engagement about 1 1/2"
from the floor.
