Hi Cory,

I'm in the process of installing a stereo in my '6 also.

I've decided to put the speakers in the footwells as you currently have
rather than in the kidney pads above the tunnel.

My reason for this was simply improved sound - with the speakers in the
standard place, the opposite speaker is cancelling the other out resulting
in a rather tinny sound. By flush mounting the speakers on the sides of the
footwells, they have a better baffle thus the bass response is better.

I'm also mounting speakers on the back panel that hides the fuel tank. The
DPO butchered this panel when he installed a roll bar (which is no longer
in the car). I'll enlarge the existing holes, strengthen the mounting and
put speakers in. The stereo is a clarion with a disc stacker. The speakers
are sony 6x9's and I'm using an alpine amp.

In a nutshell, it depends on what you want are trying to acheive for your car.
If you are going for the dead original look, you would probably be better
to go with the old AM radio and put the speakers in the tunnel covers.
Personally I prefer functionality over originality, but this is up to each
individual.

However, in NZ we have a couple of radio hams who have a side line business
in updating old car radios. What they do is build a modern radio receiver
into an old radio case thus the car radio looks original, but has modern
features (one I saw even controlled a CD stacker!). That may be a good
compromise for the two.

Hope this helps,
Bernard
