Dick P.----It could be that the PO was also into 'home-made' fixes
inside the distributor. The plate that the points are secured to should
advance with rpm's, as you know. If you haven't already done so, check
this with a timing light to confirm your findings. If you don't see an
advance of at least 16 deg. from idle to around 3,000 rpm it just might
be that the wrong springs are in there. The original setup had one
light spring, and one heavy spring. The light spring is always in play,
while the heavy one will be slack until the plate advances with rpms.
Total advance is then limited when this motion bumps up against a post.
All visable as you know, when the points plate is removed from the
distributor body.
I've always thought it to be more bother than it's worth to try to fit
an alternate distributor, such as the Mallory. I did this years ago
with a 'Vette only to find out it had no tach connection. The Lucas unit
works fine when maintained, and parts aren't substituted willy-nilly. If
your two springs are not as described above, they can be ordered from
one of the Big Three.
Let us know what you find.
