Joe---Masters can give you the best answer on this, but if you just want
to get the engine running, this is what you need:
On the original '76 wiring you should have two wires running to the "+"
side of the coil. One allows the engine to start with a full 12 volts,
but as soon as you 'let go' of the ignition key, power from one wire
stops flowing. The second wire is the one with resistance. (or
ballasted) When you cut the wire or remove it from the coil + , the
engine, as you know, will not continue to run. If you want a full 12
volts for your "new" ignition, take it straight from a
'switch-controlled' source at the fuse box, so it will operate with your
ignition key. Make up a wire with two, insulated spade connectors at
each end and connect for the fuse box and the coil terminal. There are
places in the harness that you could use, but taking it from the fuse
box will get you going. You can get fancy as you want to make it look
good.
