Chris,

Glad to hear you've got the car up and running well. The pinging
sounds odd. When do you hear it? As Dick T. wrote, you usually only
hear pinging during a high load situation, such as acceleration.
Maybe you have a weak mixture, which is causing this. My mixture (with
the same Goodparts mods you have) is VERY rich at idle, but dead stoich
to a bit rich at other throttle positions. You should have no need to
retard the ignition. I am also running 10 degrees static, no vacuum
advance/retard, and premium gas. No pinging. I'm thinking you've got
a lean mixture. I installed an O2 sensor and air/fuel gauge, it helped
a lot. After spending so much on an engine, you definitely don't want
to blow it because of severe detonation. Drive your car around for a
while and check the plugs immediately after, with as little idling as
possible. Idling for too long will darken up the plugs, and won't give
you an accurate picture of your cruising mixture. It's important that
you get the cruising mixture right. Carburetors can't give a perfect
mixture over all conditions. If you are good at idle, chances are you
are lean everywhere else (with all the mods you have).
