Ryan,

I recently replaced my original contact point ignition system with a Crane
3000 optical trigger system and a Crane high energy coil. The coil is the GM
HEI style mounted in a chrome bracket. I made an aluminum mounting plate and
mounted it in place of the original coil. It's a very neat installation. The
optical trigger is mounted within the original distributor. It depends what
is wrong with your distributor if this system will work for you. If there is
a problem with the mechanical advance or the shaft bushings this may not be
the answer. Now that I think about it, an optical trigger may not be
affected much by warn shaft bushings. I have some photos of the installation
that could be scanned and emailed to you. The upgrade was done just before
a frame off restoration started so I have only a few hundred miles on the
new system. Thus far it has worked great. There is no apparent boost in
performance but there is still a lot of engine work planned.
