Russ---If you haven't got the sprocket(s) off yet, the one on the
crankshaft can sometimes be a little pesky. In this case, small gear
puller wlll certainly help. If the engine front plate is off, this
bottom gear can be persuaded from the crankshaft with a soft hammer, of
rawhide or even lead. These sprockets are kind of soft, and wil
bugger-up easily, so I don't recommend using anything other than the
above. Try using ViseGrips in removing the key from the crankshaft. Oil
things up beforehand, and reluctantly, this key will come out. When
everything is new, or polished, as when you reinstall these parts,
things should slip in easily.
You're right about tool S341. It's a diff case spreader, not a gear
puller. Bentley has several "errors" in their manual, but it's still one
of the better ones to refer to.
The chain tensioner anchor pin gets little wear, and should last
forever.
While you're putting things back together, a few dabs of (blue) Locktite
on the threads of the long bolt that secures the crank pulley, will help
insure this doesn't shake loose, as mine once did.

I'm in the midst of replacing my timing
chain, sprockets, tensioner and
tensioner mounting components. The
tensioner bracket attaches to the cover
using rivets however they are not pop
rivets but look like a threadless
roundhead screw. How does one install
this type of rivet? Should I even bother
replacing the bracket - does it wear?
Will I need to use a gear puller to
remove the sprockets? Bentley indicates
tool S341 but doesn't say for which step
it is used. S341 doesn't look like a
gear puller but perhaps something to
hold the sprockets and chains when
installing on the shafts. Can I install
the assembly without this tool?
