A while back I posted problem my son was having with his 1985 2000 saloon:-
The fundamental problem is that it has no power and will not rev beyond
half revs. Sounds like a bus or lorry then.
Tickover and low revs appear very sweet.
Story to date is that low compressions were found on 2 cylinders (under
100) and not very good on the rest (under 120). Head was removed, 2 valve
seats replaced, everything generally decoked and lapped in.
The result is a huge improvement, but still runs a little rough. Did notice
that there is no flame trap on the carb to rocker cover and blocking off
the carb inlets where the scavenge pipes come in seems to make it run just
about right - before readjusting mixture...
So a bit more work and that should be fine.
Attention is now moving to the overdrive.
In very hot weather it feels as though it is trying to engage itself
without the driver selecting it. Its not electrics as we disconnected the
feed to the solenoid to see what happened. More worrying is the graunching
noise that starts appearing intermittently at speeds over 50. Hard to tell
if overdrive is engaged or not when it starts happening. It is not in sync
with gearbox rotational speed, it's as though something is slowly following
the rotation of the innards of the gearbox. Sounds like a fatal problem
with overdrive unit.
Will duly report back as and when.
Cheers
Roly
