Friends,
First, someone sent me an email saying they'd started a list
of all the different fastener sizes/styles used on a MK1.
I appear to have lost that email. If you're that person, send
me an email.
Now on to the real message.
For those who missed my earlier message, I'm working
on a ground up restoration of a MK1 that I saved from
the scrapper. My goal is to have this at the big west
coast (I'm in California) shows this summer. At the moment
it looks like this may actually be possible. I've already got
the new sheetmetal in hand, and the body shop is scheduled.
None of the folks here at work are really into restorations
(hey, most don't even change their own oil) and the wife just
looks at the MK1 and says "thats nice dear", so you get to hear
all about the state of my MK1!!
[don't try this at home kids, I'm a trained professional]
Over the past week:
. Removed entire front suspension
. Removed drivetrain except the differential
. Removed all the chrome bits (badges, letters, etc)
from the front of the car
. Removed the headlight assemblies, and the two
headlight buckets.
. Removed the front bumper and associated brackets.
I'm happy to say that in doing this I didn't uncover
any problems I didn't already know about!!
This weekend I'm going to move on to the disassembly
of the doors, interior trim, and what is left of the
steering, electricals and heater core.
Currently I'm contemplating what to fabricate so
that the car can be moved around the body shop.
I'm going to be restoring the suspension while they
do the body shell.
I've got thoughts about some kind of cross member
in front with 5-600lb capacity casters mounted
to it. In the rear I'm thinking about just using the
outermost mounting point holes and not bothering
with a cross member. Thoughts?
Have any of you ever used the Eastwood powder
coating system? I know its not original, but it
has a certain appeal when I think about coating
the suspension parts.
As always, I'm on the lookout for those rare parts that
nobody has spares of -- complete center consoles,
a set of wheel trim rings and hub caps, etc.
